Celebrating MLK DAY

For the first time ever, today UPS Teamsters are celebrating Martin Luther King Day as a paid holiday thanks to our historic new contract.

Dr. King dedicated and sacrificed his life in the struggle for civil rights and workers’ rights. He was assassinated in Memphis while supporting sanitation workers on strike and was a major figure in the labor movement. While we honor his legacy with a federal holiday, for many years UPS refused Teamster demands to recognize MLK Day as a paid holiday. But Teamster unity and militancy last year during the contract campaign forced the company to concede, adding MLK Day as a holiday in all supplements, riders, and addenda, per Article 29, Section 4 of the National Master Agreement.

Any UPS Teamster who chooses to work on this holiday should make sure they are getting holiday pay in accordance with their supplement.

It took a long time to make UPS understand Dr. King’s immortal words: “The time is always right to do what is right.” But today we can finally rest and respect the dream.

Teamsters Local 705 and US Foods are back at the table this morning in Chicago as the strike against the broadline food distributor continues to grow nationwide. Today, picket lines extended to nearly 1,000 members in St. Louis, Philadelphia, and more California locations.

From coast to coast, Teamsters are holding the line, with thousands of workers honoring picket line extensions in solidarity with Local 705 members. If US Foods doesn’t get serious in negotiations today, things will only get worse for this company as the strike spreads to even more facilities across the country.

Teamsters are united in this fight and will do whatever it takes to make sure they are protected. The company knows what they were up against. It’s time for US Foods to do the right thing and get a deal done today. Tick tock…

The fight is on at US FOODS

Today, at 12:01 a.m. CT, more than 130 members of Teamsters Local 705 launched a strike against US Foods after weeks of contentious contract negotiations. The strike comes less than two days after 160 US Foods drivers in California stood strong to win representation with Teamsters Local 853 to address years of workplace concerns.

“Our warning to US Foods was clear – meet our demands at the negotiating table or face a strike. Now, the company must bear the consequences of their inaction. Our members will remain on the streets until US Foods gets serious in negotiations,” said Juan Campos, Local 705 Secretary-Treasurer and International Vice President At-Large.

This strike in Chicago follows the expiration of Local 705’s contract with US Foods on December 29. In November, the Chicago drivers voted unanimously to authorize a strike, emphasizing their commitment to securing a strong contract.

“The Teamsters are at critical moment with this company. All across the country, workers at US Food are rising up, taking action, and demanding change,” said Tom Erickson, Director of the Teamsters Warehouse Division and Teamsters Central Region International Vice President. “California workers were sick of the disrespect and came together to win a union voice, and we told the company what would happen if they failed to meet our members’ demands in Chicago. US Foods has brought this strike upon itself.”
